Be able to Restore Windows File Backup on Linux (vice-versa)

I'd like to be able to restore files of a customer who weas backing up with Windows, to linux. Their server was lost and they installed a linux server. We were backing up on Windows. We had to setup a VM to restore over the network and it's terrible slow. It should be cross-OS compatible.
